Should you adopt a kitten or an older cat?
There are many cats up for adoption all over the country, so if you are looking to adopt a cat, you may be wondering what age he or she should be.
Taking many factors into consideration, such as your lifestyle and your home, you can decide whether it's best for you and your family to get a kitten or an adult cat.
Who should get an adult cat?
If you are a working professional or you already have children in your life, you may be better off getting an older cat. Adult cats are often calmer than their younger counterparts, so they'll likely be better fits in a calmer house full of people who are gone most of the day. Kittens will require more time and attention, not to mention time spent cleaning up after them, than adult cats, so if you're gone most of the day, an older cat can be the best fit for you. If you have small children, an adult cat may also be a better choice. Generally more patient and self-contained, older cat will most likely avoid your child altogether if he or she chooses, which can prevent injuries on the part of both your child and your new pet, noted Safe Animal Haven. If you already have a cat, the same is true as well - older cats likely have spent time with other felines, so they'll often mesh better.
Who should get a kitten?
If you have the time and the energy to devote to raising a kitten, then you should adopt one. However, there is a lot more work to raising a kitten than buying a few toys. Meow Cat Rescue noted that you’d probably need to kitten-proof your home by tucking electrical wires out of sight and by hiding your more delicate items. You'll also need lots of cat toys and other gear for your new pet. Kittens also do much better alongside other kittens, so having a few younger felines running around your home may be your best bet.
One thing to remember about kittens is that they grow up quickly. While kittens are adorable and playful, within a year they'll often become a mellower adult, so it's best not to adopt a kitten just because of cuteness alone. If you want to add a member to your household that will be both a playmate and companion, then a kitten is for you.
